The Pro version includes five Berlitz dictionaries to translate words between English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, which is four languages more than in many programs. To make up for that loss, however, SoftMaker’s language support is excellent. The Frugal Parson also finds the checker gets a lot of false-positives with the same spelling in the found and suggestion boxes. Its spelling checker doesn’t offer automatic inline checking (with those squiggly lines used in Microsoft Word), which is slightly clunkier. With all these features, it is a surprise that the program doesn’t have a grammar checker. So you could do some very sophisticated page-layout design and then export it directly to PDF, too. Unlike most word processors, TextMaker also includes many page layout and form creation tools, including Guides and Grids, text blocks, picture frames, field titles for drop-down menus, lines and drawing tools, and character and paragraph styles. In comparison, the LibreOfficeWriterToolbar is not as nicely designed as SoftMaker’s equivalent, nor does it have one-click icons to change to the other office modules.

With Softmaker’s Android app, you can read, edit and create docs on your Android pad or phone, although the Frugal Parson can’t imagine trying to edit any complex word or spreadsheet document on a phone screen.īefitting a Eurozone-based application with worldwide aspirations, Softmaker’s language support appears to be excellent. SoftMaker also offers Linux and Android versions (which Microsoft doesn’’t). SoftMaker uses the older standard menus (pre-MS Office 2007 style) instead of the newer Microsoft tool ribbon. Unlike most competitors to Microsoft, the SoftMaker Pro version now includes an Outlook look-alike called eM Client, which might – by itself – be worth the price.įrom both personal experience and reading other reviews, SoftMaker’’s ability to import Microsoft’s equivalent files is excellent, as is it’s ability to export in those formats (as well as the LibreOffice/OpenOffice formats).
